John Thode

Digital Media and Technology Co-Chair

John is a widely-recognized technology leader who has architected and led the growth of a multitude of businesses, as Chairman, Board Member, CEO, and senior executive. John has most recently, and presently, applied technology to monetize distressed real estate properties, utilizing Big Data and proprietary modeling. He is founder and Chairman of Thode Residential Rental Properties, LLC.

Thode began his career as a wireless engineer with Motorola, the pre-eminent wireless company in the emerging cellular era. After progressive management assignments, his accomplishments included founding the 3G Smartphone SBU. He played a key BOD role in the Symbian industry software consortium and helped architect the spinoff of Motorola’s semiconductor group (Freescale). In 2005 John was recruited, as President and CEO, to lead NASDAQ listed ISCO International’s efforts to rationalize its current distressed strategy and subsequently evolve from a capital-intensive hardware business to a differentiated software-based solutions enterprise. His experience as a wireless intrapreneur attracted Dell Computer’s Michael Dell to recruit him to build their wireless business, as head of a new mobile division. John later, as EVP and General Manager, helped build McAfee to their #2 market position in mobile security while successfully helping complete the integration of its acquisition by Intel, and subsequently, as President DigitalOptics Corp., spearheaded the rationalization of six independent global P&Ls, developing a compelling business model enabling the company a $100m exit to a large strategic within 18 months. Most recently, Thode founded Thode Residential Properties, where he has applied his business acumen and technology foresight to leverage ‘Big Data’ and proprietary modeling to arbitrage opportunities in the distressed residential real estate market.

John has served on the Boards of ISCO International, Inc., Symbian Ltd., and on numerous entrepreneurial and academic advisory boards. John is co-chair of the Digital Media & Technology subgroup at Hyde Park Angels. He works with associates to source, evaluate and recommend companies for presenting to the broader membership of Hyde Park Angels.
